Source: Wisconsin Basketball Fading in Kon Knueppel Recruiting Sweepstakes

Wisconsin Basketball; Badgers recruiting target Kon Knueppel
Wisconsin Lutheran guard Kon Knueppel (33) handles the ball against Pewaukee guard Nick Janowski (25) on Tuesday January 3, 2023, at Wisconsin Lutheran High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Kon Knueppel has a hectic month of September ahead of him. The five-star in-state shooting guard has scheduled official visits with Marquette, Wisconsin basketball, Alabama, Virginia, and Duke. The expectation is that a decision will come in late September or early October.

Given the heavy hitters involved in Knueppel’s recruitment, Wisconsin Badgers head coach Greg Gard knows he’s fighting an uphill battle. Regardless, UW’s coaching staff has maintained quiet confidence throughout this process.

However, a trusted source who is well-connected in the college basketball recruiting landscape recently shared with BadgerNotes that Wisconsin fans shouldn’t bother getting their hopes up unless things change drastically during his official visit.

Source: Wisconsin Basketball Is Fading in Recruitment of Kon Knueppel

According to our source, Wisconsin basketball is “fading” in the Kon Knueppel Sweepstakes, and the odds of him becoming a homegrown Badgers player are “less than likely.”

The source indicated that Virginia & Duke are the teams to beat for the 6-foot-5, 205-pound sharpshooter and that Tony Bennett is pulling “every connection under the sun” to get him there.

The latest development seems to confirm that there is still no consensus decision among his camp, and a clearer picture should emerge following his visits in the coming weeks. Regardless, Wisconsin’s positioning entering the official visits isn’t a ringing endorsement of their chances.

Another storyline to monitor that could bode well for the Badgers is five-star forward Cooper Flagg reclassifying to the 2024 recruiting class. He’s considered a Duke lean and could potentially take a spot they might have otherwise used on Knueppel.

Final Thoughts

Greg Gard and the Wisconsin basketball program landing Kon Knueppel was always considered a long shot once his recruitment went national. Nevertheless, it doesn’t make the info shared with BadgerNotes any less disheartening.

But remember, the Badgers have an official visit on tap next week, and who knows what surprises they might have in store. Early on, sources indicated that playing close to home carried significant weight — will the hometown hero angle be enough?

Let’s see if the “Silent Assassin” has an ace hidden up his sleeve.
