In a season denoted by struggles and shortcomings, Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football program plunged to new depths with a disheartening 24-10 loss to Northwestern at Camp Randall Stadium.

I’d normally call this rock bottom, but after back-to-back losses to Indiana and Northwestern — and two weeks left to play — I’ll save myself the embarrassment and wait and see for myself because bowl eligibility is far from a given.

Here are a few things that stood out from the Wisconsin Badgers losing to David Braun and the Wildcats.

Wisconsin Football First-Half Defensive Lapses

Mike Tressel’s defense faced a nightmarish first half, allowing Northwestern to score touchdowns on every possession.

The usually reliable Wisconsin football defense crumbled, with issues in coverage leading to explosive plays by the Wildcats.

Notably, Wisconsin failed to halt Northwestern on third down until late in the second quarter, showcasing a stark departure from their defensive prowess.

Despite a strong second half where UW made adjustments and held Northwestern to just 31 yards in the second half, the damage had already been done.

Injuries Hamper Key Returnees

There was plenty of anticipation surrounding the Wisconsin football team’s return of starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai, wide receiver Chimere Dike, and running back Braelon Allen from injuries.

However, the impact was almost non-existent as both Dike and Allen operated at limited capacity, hampered by lingering injuries. Despite a promising start, Mordecai couldn’t spark the struggling offense — completing 31-of-45 passes for 255 yards and running for another 25 on the ground.

The trio’s return didn’t provide the much-needed offensive boost, leaving the Wisconsin Badgers searching for answers on offense — answers I don’t think they’ll find between now and the end of the season.

Wisconsin Football Has an Uphill Battle for Bowl Eligibility

With a 5-5 record and a streak of 21 consecutive bowl game qualifications on the line, Wisconsin football faces an uphill battle to secure postseason eligibility under first-year head coach Luke Fickell.

The remaining games against Nebraska and Minnesota offer an opportunity, but recent losses have dampened expectations to the point that almost nobody believes the Badgers can even accomplish that.

Despite the preseason expectations under Coach Luke Fickell, the team must somehow rediscover its winning form to salvage one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory.

The road ahead remains uncertain as the Badgers grapple with defensive challenges, injury concerns, and the quest for bowl eligibility.

The team’s resilience will be tested in the final stretch, emphasizing the urgency to address persistent issues that have marred Fickell’s inaugural season in Madison. Even though it’s year one — Fickell already finds himself fighting an uphill battle to win over Wisconsin football fans.
