Wisconsin football (1-1, 0-0 B1G) dropped the ball in its first significant test of the season, with a disappointing 31-22 defeat at the hands of the Washington State Cougars on Saturday night in Pullman.

Now, it’s all about how Luke Fickell and the Badgers football team bounce back in week 3 against a 2-0 Georgia Southern team at Camp Randall Stadium.

Before that happens, let’s look at the betting lines for the upcoming contest and how ESPN’s FPI sees the game shaking out.

Wisconsin Football vs. Georgia Southern Odds and Betting Lines

  • Moneyline (ML): Georgia Southern +675 OR Wisconsin football -1050
  • Against the spread: Georgia Southern +19 (-110) OR Wisconsin -19 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 63.5 (O: -110 U: -110)

It’s hard to get a good gauge of where the Wisconsin football team is at right now. In week one, the Badgers struggled early but eventually ran the ball down Buffalo’s throats en route to a W. But Wazzu controlled the game seemingly from the jump.

Georgia Southern, in theory, should be a smackdown. But recent history hasn’t inspired much confidence in the Wisconsin Badgers‘ ability to execute and beat opponents with inferior talent.

Fingers crossed, this is the week Phil Longo’s offense puts together four quarters and moves the ball at will — but until I see it happen — I’m sitting this one out from all angles.

How ESPN’s Matchup Predictor Sees the Wisconsin Badgers Week 3 Matchup Shaking Out

Ahead of this Saturday’s matchup, ESPN’s FPI model gives Wisconsin football an 83.2% chance of winning its home matchup vs. Georgia Southern.

This projection seems about right. If UW got the job done last week, like they should have, this number would have been pushing closer to 90%, but until this team changes the narrative, this is who they are.

If Wisconsin’s defense doesn’t come out and make a statement in week 3, I’ll officially be concerned about the Badgers’ ability to win meaningful games in Big Ten play. There is enough talent to be a pretty darn good defense in 2023, but so far, nothing other than my optimism supports that statement. Wisconsin football should win this one by three scores, which means it’ll probably be more like two when it’s all said and done.
