Madison, Wis.– The Wisconsin Badgers football staff is staying busy as ever with yet another transfer portal scholarship offer extended.

Rhode Island transfer defensive back Antonio Carter has received a scholarship offer from the Wisconsin Badgers. The 6-foot-1-inch, 200-pound Orlando, Florida native has been in the NCAA transfer portal for a handful of days and already has received over nine scholarship offers. The former class of 2019 recruit will look to find better opportunities elsewhere as he says goodbye to the Rams.

During the 2022 season, Carter recorded 60 total tackles including 4.5 tackles for a loss. Carter also recorded 11 pass defenses, one interception, and two forced fumbles as he roamed the middle of the field. In 2021, Carter recorded 45 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble as well. The talented defensive back landed with Rhode Island and received a redshirt. In the following year, Carter made a handful of appearances and recorded an interception.

After three seasons playing with the Rams, Carter will transfer with two years of eligibility left to play. In less than 24 hours, Carter received offers from Wisconsin, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Baylor among others.

Wisconsin Badgers Football Eager To Land Transfer Antonio Carter

As a defensive back, Carter is not just a coverage player but rather a do-it-all kind of defender. Carter has the size, strength, and speed to halt offenses and ball carriers as they approach. The defensive back can also drop down to support the run defense when needed. Perhaps the best attribute Carter possesses are his instincts. Carter knows where to go and when to go, which allows for big-time plays every so often.

Much like the Boston College transfer Josh DeBerry, who the Wisconsin Badgers were once tied to, Carter has the ability to cover all over the field. Carter would still represent a versatile, experienced leader that the football program could use during this time. Coach Luke Fickell is committed to winning as much as possible which often involves filling the roster with as much talent as it can handle.

Luke Fickell is a strategic roster builder and believes that taking a multi-leveled approach is the best way to revive the Badgers. Between the abundance of players already acquired in the transfer portal, and the incoming recruits, Wisconsin has not had this kind of top-down talent in a while. Continuing to improve in whatever fashion is necessary is the plan that Fickell wants to institute. The Wisconsin Badgers will execute this plan by creating competition within the team and challenging players to fight for their playing time.

By adding the defensive back Antonio Carter, Fickell and the Badgers could accomplish just that. The experienced veteran is bound to compete for his spot wherever he goes as programs begin to finalize their rosters.
