Three Things: Wisconsin Basketball vs. Minnesota

Wisconsin Badgers basketball

Wisconsin basketball looked to keep their tournament hopes alive as they took on their rival Minnesota. Yet another game within five points, the Badgers did just enough to squeak out a win 71-67. Here are three things.

Points in the Paint

Wisconsin basketball won this game because they dominated inside. Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl had their way against the smaller Golden Gophers. In the second half alone, 24 of the first 26 points for the Badgers came in the paint. For a team that relies so much on three-point shooting, to only be 1/2 in the second half and win is fantastic. Overall, they went just 3/12 from behind the arch. They finished with 48 points in the paint.

Crowl and Wahl combined for 42 points while shooting 17/24 from the field—just a dominant effort from the Wisconsin frontcourt duo.

Free Throw Shooting

Wisconsin basketball has been hindered by their free throw shooting a few times this season. For a team that plays so many games within five points, clutch free-throw shooting is a must-have Wisconsin has struggled with this season. The Badgers have their struggles on offense with long-scoring droughts; they can use all the “free” points they can get.

Tonight was a different story for the Badgers. As a team, they went 14/17 from the line. Tyler Wahl made all five attempts, including two clutch ones, to seal the game.

What’s Next?

Unfortunately, I don’t think this win guarantees Wisconsin basketball a berth in the NCAA tournament. Since the Badgers finished 12th in the standings, they will face off against Ohio State Wednesday night to kick off the Big Ten Tournament. If Wisconsin can win this game, it might give them enough to participate in the dance. If Wisconsin can go on a little run in the Big Ten Tournament, that will undoubtedly help their resume.
