Jacksonville State transfer cornerback commits to Wisconsin football
The Wisconsin Badgers have landed their first cornerback from the transfer portal to begin filling the void created by outgoing players.
Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football team have taken an important first step in what will need to be a larger effort to rebuild their cornerback room through the transfer portal this offseason.
The Badgers have secured a commitment from Jacksonville State transfer cornerback Geimere Latimer after taking an official visit to Madison.
“How they get that jit from the A to the north,” Latimer wrote in a post.
Latimer, a 5-foot-10, 187-pound defensive back, was a standout for the Gamecocks last season, recording 46 total tackles, eight pass breakups, and three interceptions. Despite only having played cornerback for two years, he has shown a knack for physical play and rapid development, traits that Wisconsin’s coaching staff finds appealing.
According to Pro Football Focus, Latimer earned a 73.2 defensive grade and a 73.0 mark in coverage. Notably, he had a 74.4 tackling grade after registering a missed tackle percentage of just 7.7%. Latimer was targeted 52 times in coverage, allowing 32 catches (61.5%) and no touchdowns.
Looking closer at Latimer’s PFF metrics, he ranked in the 75th percentile nationally in coverage grade at outside cornerback and posted a passer rating against of 62.6, which placed him in the 80th percentile.
After entering the transfer portal, the Fairburn, Georgia native took an official visit to Madison, where he connected with the coaching staff and got a firsthand look at the program. Cornerbacks coach Paul Haynes played a key role in recruiting Latimer, emphasizing the immediate opportunity available at Wisconsin due to significant turnover in the secondary.
The Badgers have lost six defensive backs this offseason, including four cornerbacks—Amare Snowden, Jonas Duclona, Jace Arnold, and most notably, Xavier Lucas—to the transfer portal. This left the room in desperate need of experienced options who could step in and play right away.
As it stands, the only returning scholarship cornerbacks are Omillio Agard and Jay Harper. Incoming freshman Jaimier Scott, Cairo Skanes, and Jahmare Washington will also join the program and provide depth this coming fall.
With two years of eligibility remaining and a redshirt available if needed, Latimer is expected to compete for playing time immediately as the Badgers look to continue rebuilding their secondary. His physicality and upside make him an intriguing addition to Wisconsin’s defense.
