Wisconsin basketball expresses interest in Wright State transfer Alex Huibregtse
Wisconsin men's basketball has contacted Wright State transfer guard Alex Huibregtse, eyeing the in-state product in the portal.
The Wisconsin Badgers are actively seeking to add backcourt depth this offseason in the transfer portal and have recently reached out to a player with in-state ties out of the Horizon League.
A source familiar with the situation informed BadgerNotes that Wisconsin, Iowa State, and several other Power 4 programs have contacted Wright State transfer guard Alex Huibregtse since he entered the transfer portal.
While no official visits to Madison have been scheduled yet, Huibregtse is in the process of arranging them as he looks to find the right place to write the final chapter of his college basketball career.
Huibregtse, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound guard from Grafton (Wis.), is coming off a senior season at Wright State, where he took a big leap, averaging 13.5 points per game, along with 3.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds.
He knocked down 90 threes last season, shooting 42.3% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc.
According to Barttorvik, Huibregtse also registered a 1.9 points above replacement per game mark, along with a 108.9 ORTG.
Before his collegiate career, Huibregtse made a name for himself at Grafton High School in Wisconsin. As a senior, he earned Wisconsin First Team All-State honors in Division 2, averaging 24.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game while shooting 47.3% from beyond the arc.
His connection to the state and familiarity with the program's culture could make the Badgers an appealing destination.
Further, Wisconsin assistant coach Sharif Chambliss was involved in recruiting Huibregtse to Wright State. That relationship could play a role if Greg Gard and the staff decide to push for a commitment from the transfer guard.
Wisconsin's interest in Huibregtse makes sense, given their need to address backcourt vacancies created by departing players. The Badgers are looking for a guard who can create his own shot, facilitate for teammates, and stretch the floor with reliable three-point shooting.
Huibregtse’s experience and offensive skill set could complement Wisconsin’s returning core and provide valuable depth in the guard rotation, presumably off the bench. That said, the seriousness of the staff’s interest remains to be seen, as there are legitimate concerns about how well his defense would hold up in the Big Ten.
While Wisconsin has expressed interest, competition for Huibregtse’s commitment will be stiff, with several programs making their pitch since he entered the transfer portal. The Badgers have also been linked to other in-state prospects in the portal, including Virginia guard Andrew Rohde, Cal State Northridge wing Keonte Jones, and Lipscomb forward Jacob Ognacevic.
As Huibregtse narrows his options and finalizes his visit schedule, he will be a name to monitor as the transfer portal market takes shape this offseason.
