Well, that didn’t take long: less than 24 hours removed from Leon Lowery Jr. committing to Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin Badgers football program after transferring from Syracuse, he’s already backed out of that decision.Â
Lowery was scheduled to take official visits to Oregon State and Baylor while he was in the portal. However, during his visit to Madison, Lowery decided to shut it down and commit to the Badgers on the spot. Â
But a report from On3’s Pete Nakos suggests his storied career at Wisconsin — much like Noah Reynolds — has ended before it ever began.Â
OLB Leon Lowery Jr. De-commits From Badgers
Listen, the transfer portal is essentially the wild Wild West right now. It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that another team contacted Leon Lowery Jr. overnight and offered him a more significant NIL package than the one Wisconsin football presented him.
Could he have rushed his decision and wanted to continue exploring his options? Sure. But I have a hard time buying that as the reason.
The 6-foot-4 pass rusher finished with 46 tackles, 16 pressures, 7.5 TFLs, 3.5 sacks, and a pass deflection last season at Syracuse and has two years of eligibility remaining. Lowery reportedly has scholarship offers from Cal, Georgia Tech, Houston, Baylor, and Oregon State.
Wisconsin football will still be big players in the transfer portal this offseason, particularly at linebacker and EDGE, as the Badgers look to improve the disruption from their front seven.
In my opinion, it seems like UW managed to dodge a bullet here.
