On Saturday afternoon, the No. 18 Wisconsin Badgers will take on the Illinois State Redbirds at Camp Randall to kick off their 2022 season.

The Badgers and Redbirds enter Saturday’s non-conference matchup looking to notch their first wins of the season. After a roster shake-up on the defensive side of the ball, the Badgers will look to build their way back to being a top defense in college football.

The Badgers lost eight seniors on the defensive side. With Maema Njongemeta and Jordan Turner now anchoring the defense at inside linebackers, the two new starters will have big shoes to fill. Meanwhile, other new contributors such as Jay Shaw and Cedric Dort will also get their first reps in a Badger uniform on Saturday.

On the offensive side, quarterback Graham Mertz looks to continue making strides in his play. Meanwhile, the backfield group of Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi will likely receive a heavy workload once again under new Badgers offensive coordinator Bobby Engram. Finally, Chimere Dike and redshirt freshman, Skyler Bell will be the starting wide receivers after the losses of seniors Danny Davis III and Kendric Pryor.

Both sides of the ball have undergone a slew of changes for the Badgers, and their first real test will come against non-conference opponent Illinois State on Saturday afternoon.
