Wisconsin Football: Badgers Senior RB Ruled Out Indefinitely

Wisconsin Badgers RB Chez Mellusi is Out Indefinitely

According to a report from Jeff Potrykus, the Wisconsin Badgers will be without running back Chez Mellusi indefinitely due to a wrist injury.

In the win against Northwestern on Saturday, Mellusi landed awkwardly on his arm mid-way through the fourth quarter. He went on to undergo wrist surgery on Sunday. While the Badgers still pulled away with the victory, they lost a key contributor in the run game.

This is the second injury that he has suffered that could keep him out long-term. In his first season with Wisconsin, Mellusi suffered a left knee injury against Rutgers in November. He went on to miss the last games of the 2021-22 season.

Mellusi has served as the backup running back, splitting reps with Braelon Allen. Mellusi was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list at the beginning of the season. The senior back has had a productive season, posting 223 yards on 56 carries and one touchdown. He’s also been a target through the air, hauling in two catches for 25 yards and a touchdown.

The injury will leave the Badgers with Braelon Allen and Isaac Gurrendo as the top running backs. Julius Davis may also see an increased workload after the loss of Mellusi. Davis, a redshirt junior, has appeared in two games the is season. The 5-foot-10, 201-pound running back has posted 11 carries for 82 yards on the season.

Although it is unclear if Mellusi will return this season, he could return for another season at UW next year. Mellusi has one more year of eligibility due to the COVID pandemic.

The Wisconsin Badgers now face a predicament in their running back room, and it will be key to watch how they respond to the loss of Mellusi.
